Kerb Lifter

HSE Construction Information Sheet no. 57, Handling kerbs; Reducing the risks of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) “explains how to manage the risks associated with the repetitive manual handling of kerbs and associated products”. In addition to giving advice and direction with respect to handling kerbstones, it also provides sources of information on other areas of manual handling legislation and practice. In summary, the HSE advise that kerbstones should by default be handled using machinery, with direct manual input only being acceptable when all other options have been exhausted.

The Powergrab Kerb Lifter has been designed to support and implement these recommendations. Featuring a cantilever mechanism with a rolling fulcrum pivot, this kerb lifter design delivers a consistent clamping action, generated by the downward force of the load. In keeping with the recommendations, the Powergrab Kerb Lifter should where possible be used with a mechanical lifting system, a typical example being a mini-digger. This will permit both lifting, transport and placement of the kerbstone.

Kerb Lifting with the Manhole Lifter trolley

Where mechanised lifting is not available, the Powergrab Kerb Lifter can be coupled to the Manhole Buddy, manhole lifting trolley. This trolley delivers a mechanical advantage of approximately 2.5:1 and uses only downward application of effort to raise its load. The operator is therefore not involved in any potentially hazardous lifting actions and the effort required to raise the load is greatly reduced. In addition, the operator is standing at a safe distance from the suspended load, which need never be more than 30 - 40 cms above ground level. Having placed the kerbstone and retracted the lifting system, the Powergrab Kerb Lifter handles can be used to make final adjustments or to ’tamp’ the kerbstone on the bed.

The Powergrab design has also been applied to the lifting of other products, including different kerb types, sleepers, paving slabs and pipes. The mechanical advantage inherent in the Manhole Buddy trolley can be applied in numerous situations to minimise or eliminate manual handling of heavy or awkward loads. Please contact us if you wish to discuss potential applications for any of these products
